Short-Form Video Contest Submission Guidelines

Committed to its mission of women inspiring women, SheKnows Media launches #TheFWord short-form video contest to explore the current zeitgeist around feminism. Individuals of all genders, ethnicities and points of view living in the United States and Canada (excluding Quebec) are encouraged to submit a brief, two- to three-minute video that explains what feminism means to them.

Through this video contest and in partnership with the Ms. Foundation for Women, #TheFWord aspires to create conversation about gender equality that includes perspective on intersectionality and diversity through powerful stories, creativity and humor. The winning entrant will receive a prize package valued up to $5,000 from SheKnows Media, including $4,000 in cash. Please see #TheFWord Official Rules for details.

Key contest dates for #TheFWord are:

  • January 13, 2016: The no-cost call for entries opens at noon ET
  • February 19, 2016: The entry period closes at 11:59 p.m. ET and judges review begins
  • March 21, 2016: Finalists are posted and public voting begins
  • March 28, 2016: Public voting ends
  • April 12, 2016: The winner will be announced on Equal Pay Day

What We’re Looking For

SheKnows Media initiated #TheFWord to explore what it means to be a feminist today. Individuals over the age of 18 (or over the age of 19 in Alabama or Nebraska) living in the United States and Canada (excluding Quebec) are invited to submit a brief video between two and three minutes in length that explains what feminism means to them. Entries that meet these requirements will be judged on the following three criteria, which shall be equally weighted:

  • Creativity: Does the entrant take an unexpected, unique and/or imaginative approach to express his or her point of view on feminism?  
  • Originality: Videos that are submitted must be created specifically for #TheFWord contest. Pre-existing videos will be disqualified from the competition.
  • Quality: Videos will be judged based on how well they are produced. The videography, as well as any graphics and audio elements used, should be of high quality.

Because #TheFWord short-form video contest will culminate in a special screening in New York City on April 12, 2016, SheKnows Media is looking for original works that are compelling, thought-provoking videos which represent a range of perspectives on the issue. Entries can take any tone or use any storytelling format, but all should use good high-quality video and audio production. Call for Entries: Deadline and How to Submit

The process to submit your video for #TheFWord is simple and brief and there is no cost associated with entering. The online form asks for contact information, a link to the video and a short description of the entry. Entries must be submitted here for consideration beginning on January 13, 2016 and before 11:59 p.m. on February 19, 2016. All videos must be original and created specifically for #TheFWord. Eligibility and Rules

#TheFWord is open to all individuals over the age of 18 (or over the age of 19 in Alabama or Nebraska) who live in the United States and Canada (excluding Quebec), and there is no limit to the number of entries per person. Entries can be professional or amateur but must be original to #TheFWord contest; you must own or validly license the rights to any images, art or music used. Videos that have been publicly posted prior to the contest will be disqualified.

All entries should be include a URL where your video is privately hosted. Videos should be available as in 1080p, 24 fps .mp4 or .mov formats. By submitting to #TheFWord, entrants agree to allow the full version or highlights or excerpts of their video(s) to be shared on SheKnows Media’s sites and social media channels for marketing and promotion of the contest. The entrant must be able to provide a full-quality version of their video file via download.  Please see #TheFWord Official Rules for details.

Right to Submit and Fees

SheKnows Media requires that the entrant either owns the work or has all rights from the appropriate parties to enter the work, with all rights granted therein. In the event that an entrant without such rights submits an entry, the entrant will not be eligible for the competition. SheKnows Media is not liable for any copyright infringement on the part of the entrant.

Submission of any entry gives SheKnows Media the right to use it for exhibition, promotion and publication across the web, video and social media.

#TheFWord short-form video contest is free to enter.

Foreign Language Entries

#TheFWord is open all individuals living in the United States or Canada. Subtitles or dubbing is required for videos in a language other than English.

How Entries Will Be Judged

After the call for entries closes at 11:59 p.m. ET on February 19, 2016, SheKnows Media executives and editors will determine which entries move into a second round of review based on guidelines listed above in the section titled What We’re Looking For.

The second round of review will be conducted by the following panel of judges:

  • Laura Benanti, Tony Award-winning Broadway and television actress (“Gypsy,” “Nashville,” and “Supergirl”)
  • Connie Britton, Emmy nominated actress and director, with stand-out roles on series such as “Nashville,” “American Horror Story” and “Friday Night Lights”
  • Kristen Joiner, President of The Representation Project
  • Tonya Lewis Lee, producer, entrepreneur and writer
  • Alexandra Posen, artist and Co-Founder of Zac Posen
  • Franchesca Ramsey, writer, actress and video blogger best known for her Chescaleigh Comedy channel and host of “MTV Decoded”
  • Michael Skolnik, civil rights activist and former President of Russell Simmons’ GlobalGrind.com
  • Jamia Wilson, Executive Director at Women, Action and the Media
  • Teresa C. Younger, President and Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Foundation

SheKnows Media reserves the right to modify the list of judges as its sole discretion.  At least three entries that make it past the judges’ review will be considered #TheFWord contest finalists and will be announced publicly via press release, as well as on SheKnows Media properties including SheKnows.com and BlogHer.com and across social media.

The winner will ultimately be chosen by the public via popular vote, beginning on March 21, 2016 and ending on March 28, 2016, with a limit of one vote per person per day. Finalists will be provided with a URL that can be shared to encourage their networks to vote for their entry during the public voting phase of the competition.

Winning the Contest

The winning video will be honored on April 12, 2016 at a special screening event in New York City.

The winning entrant’s work, along with the finalist videos, will be showcased at the event, as well as featured on SheKnows.com, BlogHer.com and shared via social media during and after the event. The winner of #TheFWord short-form video contest will receive a prize package valued up to $5,000.00 USD from SheKnows Media, including round-trip airfare for two, one night’s hotel accommodation in New York City for the event, and $4,000.00 USD in cash.  The winning entrant is responsible for all taxes associated with this prize package.  Please see #TheFWord Official Rules for details.

#TheFWord Official Rules

#TheFWord Short-Form Video Contest (the “Contest”) is intended for participation only in the United States, the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec) and shall be construed according to, and governed by, United States or Canadian law (depending on the entrant’s country of residence). Do not participate in the Contest if you are not a legal resident of the United States or Canada (excluding Quebec) physically located in the United States or Canada (other than Quebec) at the time of entry or do not fall within the eligibility requirements set forth in the Official Rules below.

OFFICIAL RULES 

NO PURCHASE, DONATION OR PAYMENT NECESSARY.  A PURCHASE, DONATION OR PAYMENT OF ANY KIND WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING.

ONCE YOU SUBMIT A VIDEO IN THE MANNER SET FORTH BELOW, IT BECOMES THE LICENSED PROPERTY OF SHEKNOWS, LLC

CONTEST DESCRIPTION:  The Contest begins on or about January 13, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (“EST”) the entry period closes on February 19, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. EST, and the winner will be announced on or about April 12, 2016 (the “Contest Period”).  The Contest provides you with an opportunity to submit during the Contest Period a two- to three-minute original video that explains what feminism means to you (each, a “Submission”).  By participating in the Contest, each entrant unconditionally accepts and agrees to comply with and abide by these Official Rules and the decisions of SheKnows, LLC, an Arizona limited liability company with its principal place of business located at 14614 North Kierland Boulevard, Suite S150, Arizona 85254 (“Sponsor”), or its affiliates or promotion partners, which shall be final and binding in all respects.  Sponsor reserves the right to modify or terminate the Contest if conditions arise that compromise its integrity or intended play.

ELIGIBILITY:  Only legal residents of the fifty (50) United States, the District of Columbia or Canada (excluding Quebec) who are eighteen (18) years of age or older (or nineteen (19) years of age or older in Alabama or Nebraska) and located in the United States, the District of Columbia or Canada (excluding Quebec) at the time of entry are eligible to enter the Contest. Sponsor and Sponsor’s promotion partners and their respective parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, distributors, retailers, sales representatives, advertising and promotion agencies and each of their respective officers, directors, managers and employees (and immediate family members and those persons living in the same household (whether related or not) of any such officers, directors, managers and employees) (collectively, the “Sponsor Entities”) are ineligible to enter the Contest or win any Prize (as defined below) in connection with the Contest.  The Contest is subject to all applicable federal, state, provincial, municipal and local laws and regulations and is void in Puerto Rico, all U.S. territories and possessions and overseas military installations, Quebec and where prohibited.

HOW TO ENTER: To enter online, visit the website https://thefword.splashthat.com/ (the “Website”) during the Contest Period and complete and submit the entry form for the Contest, including your contact information, a link to your Submission, and a short description of your Submission.  By submitting to the Contest, entrants agree to allow the full version or highlights or excerpts of their Submission to be shared on Sponsor’s sites and social media channels for marketing and promotion of the Contest.  The entrant must be able to provide a full-quality version of their Submission file via download.  All Submissions must be actually received by no later than February 19, 2016 at 11:59 EST in order to participate. The Website’s database clock will be the official time keeper for this Contest.  All requested information on the entry form must be completed to enter and to be eligible to win any Prize in connection with the Contest.  Proof of entering information at the Website is not considered proof of delivery to or receipt by Sponsor of such entry. Any communication, data or other information transmitted by an entrant in connection with the Contest, whether by email, data survey/query or otherwise, is and will be treated as non-confidential and non-proprietary.   Submissions must be made by the entrant only at the Website.  Submissions made by any other individual or any entity and/or originating at any other website or email address, including, but not limited to, commercial Contest subscription notification and/or entering service sites, will be declared invalid and disqualified for the Contest. The use of any device to automate the entry process is prohibited.  Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to reject, disqualify and/or remove any Submission that violates these Official Rules without any notification or warning.

SUBMISSIONS: The requirements for Submissions are as follows:

  • Each Submission must consist of an original two- to three-minute video that explains what feminism means to you. 
  • All Submissions must be original and created specifically for the Contest. 
  • You must own or otherwise have the rights to any images, art or music that you include in any Submission.  
  • All Submissions should include a URL where your Submission is privately hosted. Submissions should be available as in 1080p, 24 fps .mp4 or .mov formats. 
  • The Submission not contain any content that is obscene, pornographic, libelous or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate. 
  • You agree that once you submit your Submission, it becomes the licensed property of Sponsor. 
  • You may submit an unlimited number of Submissions; provided, that each Submission must be submitted with a separate entry form on the Website.

PRIZE/ODDS: The prize for the Contest (the “Prize”) shall consist of one grand prize, which includes round-trip airfare for two to New York, one night’s hotel accommodation in New York for #TheFWord screening event on April 12, 2016, and $4,000.00 USD in cash (approximate retail value up to $5,000.00).  The Prize is non-assignable and non-transferable.  No cash alternative or prize substitutions shall be available; provided, however, that Sponsor retains the right to substitute a prize of comparable or greater value or, at Sponsor’s election, the cash value of the applicable Prize, in the event a stated Prize is unavailable, in whole or in part, for any reason.  Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible Submissions received during the Contest Period.

VOTING AND JUDGING:  Beginning on January 13, 2016 at 12:00 p.m. EST, eligible individuals may enter the Contest.  The entry period closes on February 19, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. EST.  Sponsor’s executives and editors will then determine which Submissions move into a second round of review based on the following three criteria, which shall be equally weighted: 

a.     Creativity:  Does the entrant take an unexpected, unique and/or imaginative approach to express his or her point of view on feminism?  

b.     Originality:  Submissions must be created specifically for the Contest.  Pre-existing videos will be disqualified from the Contest.

c.      Quality:  Submissions will be judged based on how well they are produced.  The videography, as well as any graphics and audio elements used, should be of high quality.

A second round of review will then be conducted by a panel of judges and will be based on the criteria outlined above.  At least three Submissions that make it past the judges’ review will be considered Contest finalists and will be announced publicly via press release, as well as on Sponsor’s properties.  The winner will ultimately be chosen by the public via popular vote beginning on March 21, 2016 and ending on March 28, 2016, with a limit of one vote per person per day.  Because of the unique nature and scope of the Contest, Sponsor reserves the right, in addition to those other rights reserved herein, to modify any date(s) or deadline(s) set forth in these Official Rules or otherwise governing the Contest.

Any Submission that is considered by Sponsor in its sole discretion to be obscene, pornographic, libelous or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate, or which otherwise does not comply with these Official Rules will be disqualified and will not be eligible as a Submission.  All requested information on the entry form must be completed to enter and to be eligible to win.  Except as otherwise stated in these Official Rules, personal information collected in connection with this Contest will be used in accordance with the privacy policy for the Website and with the consent given by an entrant at the time of entering a Submission. 

The Sponsor will attempt to contact the potential winner of a Prize by telephone or email using the contact information provided by the entrant at the time of entry.  If the selected entrant cannot be reached within two (2) business days after the selection or after two (2) attempts to contact such entrant, whichever comes first, or if the selected entrant is otherwise ineligible or fails to complete the Prize Claim Documents (as defined below), Sponsor shall have the right, but not the obligation, to award the applicable Prize to another entrant selected from the remaining eligible entries.  This process may continue until the available number of Prizes have been awarded.  Notwithstanding anything to the contrary set forth herein, Sponsor shall have no obligation to award a Prize with respect to which the initial entrant selected to win that Prize cannot be reached within two (2) business days after the selection or after two (2) attempts to contact such entrant, whichever comes first, or if such entrant is otherwise ineligible or fails to complete the Prize Claim Documents.  Sponsor shall have no liability for any winner notification that is not received for any reason. 

GENERAL PRIZE CONDITIONS:  Each winner of a Prize shall be solely responsible for all federal, state, provincial, municipal and/or local taxes, and for any other fees or costs associated with the Prize awarded. All expenses not specifically stated as being included are excluded, including, but not limited to, taxes, including any income tax, and are the responsibility of the winner.  The winner of the Contest will be issued an Internal Revenue Service Form 1099 for the value of their prize for the tax year in which prize was won.  No assignment or transfer of any prize is permitted.  Potential winners may be required to execute an Affidavit of Eligibility, a Liability Release (where legal), a Publicity Release and any applicable forms required by a taxing authority (collectively, “Prize Claim Documents”).  Potential winners who are residents of Canada will be required to correctly answer the following skill testing question: (3x6) + (12/2) – (8+4) + (11-2) =.  If a potential winner fails or refuses to sign and return all Prize Claim Documents within the specified time period, such potential winner may be disqualified and an alternate winner may be selected.

LICENSE:  By entering a Submission in the Contest, each entrant hereby grants Sponsor and its successors a worldwide, perpetual, exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free, sublicenseable (through multiple tiers) and transferable license (with a right to create derivative works) to use, copy, modify, distribute, perform, publicly perform and display entrant’s Submission, in any and all media, in whatever form, for any legal purposes whatsoever now known or hereinafter becomes known.  Each entrant irrevocably waives any and all so-called moral rights they may have in the Submission(s) submitted by him or her.

REPRESENTATIONS AND WARRANTIES/INDEMNIFICATION: By entering a Submission in the Contest, each entrant represents and warrants that (a) entrant has read these Official Rules, is eligible to participate in the Contest and agrees to be bound by these Official Rules, (b) all of the information provided in the entry form is accurate, (c) entrant’s Submission is an original work of the entrant, (d) entrant’s Submission has not been previously published, (e) entrant’s Submission does not infringe upon the copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy, publicity or other intellectual property or other rights of any person or entity and (f) entrant's Submission does not contain any disabling device, virus, worm, back door or other disruptive or malicious code that may or are intended to impair their intended performance or otherwise permit unauthorized access to, hamper, delete or damange the Website or any other computer system, software, network or data. Sponsor serves the right to request proof of these representations and warranties in a form acceptable to Sponsor from any entrant at any time. By submitting a Submission, entrant warrants and represents that he/she and any persons appearing or who are identifiable in the Submission consents to the submission and use and exhibition of the Submission in the manner set forth in these Official Rules. Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify any Submission for any reason, in its sole and absolute discretion. Each entrant agrees to release, defend, indemnify and hold harmless each of the Sponsor Entities, those working on behalf of the Sponsor Entities and each of their respective officers, directors, managers, representatives, employees, agents, successors and assigns from any damage, injury, death, loss or other liability, either at law or equity, whether known or unknown, asserted or non-asserted, including reasonable attorneys fees, that may arise from or in any way relate to any entrant’s participation in the Contest, entrant’s breach of any representation, warranty or covenant set forth herein, Sponsor’s use of the Submission or the awarding, acceptance, use or misuse of any prize.

GENERAL RELEASE AND INDEMNITY:  Except where prohibited, participation in the Contest constitutes a entrant’s permission for each of the Sponsor Entities to use the entrant’s name, photograph, likeness, voice, biographical information, Contest video submission, statements and address (city and state) for advertising and/or publicity purposes, on or in connection with the Website or related to the Contest or other promotions worldwide and in all forms of media now known or hereafter developed, in perpetuity, without further compensation, and each entrant hereby releases the Sponsor Entities with respect thereto.  Each entrant agrees that the Sponsor Entities are not responsible for: (a) any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by entrants, printing errors or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest; (b) technical failures of any kind, including, but not limited to, malfunctions, interruptions or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software; (c) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the entry process or the Contest; (d) technical or human error which may occur in the administration of the Contest or the processing of entries; (e) any losses, damages or injuries of any kind resulting from participation in the Contest or in any Contest-related activity, or from entrants’ acceptance, receipt, possession and/or use or misuse of any Prize, or (f) any damage to your computer system which occurs by accessing the Website or participating in the Contest.  Each entrant acknowledges and agrees that no Sponsor Entity has made any warranty, representation or guarantee express or implied, in fact or in law, with respect to any Prize, including, without limitation, to such Prize’s quality or fitness for a particular purpose.  In the event of a dispute as to the identity of an entrant which cannot be resolved to Sponsor’s satisfaction, the entry will be deemed ineligible.  Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual who is found to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or the Website, to be acting in violation of these Official Rules, or to be acting in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with the intent to disrupt or undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest, or to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person, and Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages and other remedies from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law.  No mechanically reproduced, illegible, incomplete, forged, software-generated or other automated multiple entries will be accepted. Each entrant agrees to release, defend, indemnify and hold harmless each of the Sponsor Entities, those working on behalf of the Sponsor Entities and each of their respective officers, directors, managers, representatives, employees, agents, successors and assigns from any damage, injury, death, loss or other liability, either at law or equity, whether known or unknown, asserted or non-asserted, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, that may arise from or in any way relate to any entrant’s participation in the Contest, entrant’s breach of any representation, warranty or covenant set forth herein, tax obligations arising out of receiving any Prize, Sponsor’s use of a winner’s name, photograph, likeness, voice, biographical information, video submission, statements or address or the awarding, acceptance, use or misuse of any Prize.

DISPUTES:  By entering the Contest, each entrant agrees that: (a) any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with the Contest or any Prize(s) awarded, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action; (b) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering the Contest, but in no event will attorneys’ fees be awarded or recoverable; and (c) under no circumstances will any entrant be permitted to obtain any award for, and each entrant hereby knowingly and expressly waives all rights to seek, punitive, incidental or consequential damages and/or any other damages, other than actual out-of-pocket expenses, and/or any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased.

VENUE/JURISDICTION:  EACH ENTRANT HEREBY IRREVOCABLY CONSENTS AND SUBMITS TO THE EXCLUSIVE JURISDICTION OF THE STATE AND FEDERAL COURTS, AS APPLICABLE, LOCATED WITHIN MARICOPA COUNTY, ARIZONA IN CONNECTION WITH ANY PROCEEDING ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THIS CONTEST AND WAIVES ANY OBJECTION TO VENUE IN SUCH COURTS.

SEVERABILITY:  The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these Official Rules shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision.  In the event that any provision is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceability or illegal, these Official Rules shall otherwise remain in full force and effect and shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or illegal provision were not contained herein. 

ENTRANTS’ PERSONAL INFORMATION AND ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS:  Information from entrants in this Contest is collected by Sponsor and subject to Sponsor’s privacy policy, located at http://www.sheknows.com/articles/813566.  By participating in the Contest, you agree to comply with the Terms of Use of the Website located at http://www.sheknows.com/mediakit/articles/813565/terms-of-use-agreement-1.

WINNERS LIST:  For the list of Prize winners or a copy of these Official Rules, mail a self-addressed, stamped envelope with the name of the Contest to SheKnows, LLC, Attention: Promotions Department, 14614 North Kierland Boulevard, Suite S150, Arizona 85254 (VT residents may omit return postage) such that it is received by no later than six (6) months following the end of the Contest Period.
